Evergreen Institute's Sustainability Policy

Our interim classroom building and office

Dan Chiras, the founder and director, of The Evergreen Institute was been living sustainably long before the term had been uttered. He currently lives off grid in a passive solar/solar electric home where he captures gray water to water plants and roof water for domestic uses. Dan's home and office are built almost entirely out of green materials.

The Evergreen Institute's new facility in Gerald, Missouri was purchased in 2007 with two barns, a workshop building, and a house. It is our goal to make convert these buildings to make this facilitiy as green as humanly possible.

Our hands-on workshop center where we'll teach EV car conversion and how to make your own wind turbine

We're planning to dramatically improve the efficiency with which we use all resources, especially energy and water. We've already installed water efficient showerheads and will soon install flow restrictors on faucets and dual-flush toilets. We plan to install composting toilets in our classroom facility.

We're will be making the buildings airtight and boosting the instulation to dramatically reduce heating and cooling costs.

We plan on incorporating solar hot air sytems for space heat and some passive solar. We're installing a greenhouse for growing vegetables and heating our facilities in the winter.

We're also planning on installing one or two solar electric systems to power the classroom and office and a wind turbine, too. We'd like to generate all of our own electricity within four or five years.

We will also install solar tube skylights for daylighting and solar attic fans and radiant barriers to reduce summertime heat gain. As we remodel the classroom, we will use green building materials to create a healthy, comfortable interior.

We also plan on turning our lagoon into a methane digestor to produce natural gas for the stoves and water heaters. We plan on installing solar hot water systems for domestic solar use, as well.  We hope to make biodiesel from algae that we grow in our pond and in algal growth chambers. We're even converting a car or truck to electricity for use around town and on the farm.

We print on recycled paper, usually 100% recycled paper. Some of our paper has been produced by companies that are powered by 100% wind power. We also recycle and compost all waste to make this a zero waste facility. When you attend our workshops, you'll see how we recycle all recyclables and compost all compostable waste.
