   Wind Site Assessment (2 day)

In this two-day course, taught by
Dan Chiras, Ph.D., certified wind site assessor and author of Power from the Wind, Wind Energy Basics, and The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy, students will learn techniques required to assess the suitability of sites for small wind systems. Students will obtain hands-on experience in estimating average annual wind site and estiminating wind direction. Students will also spend time assessing a site and will begin work on a wind site assessment report. 

This course qualifies for (a) MREA's Continuing Education Credits for all certified site assessors and (b) MREA's Wind Site Assessment Certificate.

Students completing the prerequisites to this course (Intro to Wind) and Wind Turbine Design Considerations (offered by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association) who pass a qualifying exam can become nationally certified wind site assessors (a program administered by MREA).

This course will cover:
    •    A detailed analysis of the forces that generate winds
    •    Types of winds
    •    Factors that affect wind flows
    •    Ways to assess electrical demand in new and existing buildings
    •    Ways to determine wind resources at a site
    •    Optimum tower height and tower placement
    •    Performing a wind site assessment
    •    Preparing a wind site assessment reports
    •    Working with customers
    •    Economic incentives for small wind systems
    •    Qualifications to become a certified wind site assessor through MREA

Students will be required to perform a practice load analysis, estimate tree height, and prepare a site assessment during this course.
