PV Site Assessment and Practicum
(2 days)
In this two-day course taught by Dan Chiras, Ph.D., solar energy expert and author of numerous books on the subject, including The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy, Power from the Sun, Solar Electricity Basics, and Power from the Wind, participants will learn how to perform a PV site assessment.
This course qualifies for (a) MREA's Continuing Education Credits for all certified site assessors and (b) MREA's PV Site Assessment Certificate.
Participants will learn how to (1) assess a site for solar, (2) determine the type of system, (3) determine the best location for a PV array, and (4) determine the size and type of system a client should install. During this class, students will learn how to use solar site assessment software and tools, including Solar Pathfinder and Solar Pathfinder Assistant. Students will perform initial work for one practice PV site assessment, either a grid-connected PV system and an off-grid PV system, which helps apply information learned in the class. Three practice site assessments are required to become a certified site assessor through the Midwest Renewable Energy Association.
Topics include:
• How to determine solar resources at a site
• How to assess the suitability of a site for PVs • How to determine the best location and mounting option for an array
• How to determine electrical load
• How to trim electrical load
• How to size a grid-connected system
• How to size an off-grid system and battery bank
• How to size a grid-connected system with battery backup
• How to estimate array output
• How to write a site assessment report
• How to become a certified wind site assessor through the MREA • Key resources
