Intro to Strawbale Design and Construction (1 day)

This one-day workshop taught by Dan Chiras, Ph.D., author of The Natural House and The Natural Plaster Book, provides an overview of straw bale design and construction. While the majority of the day will be spent in lecture, we’ll also take a break to work with straw bales and study straw bale foundation and building at The Evergreen Institute’s Center for Renewable Energy and Green Building.

Participants will explore:

    •    History of bale building and its benefits
    •    Information about buildable bales
    •    Support structures
    •    Foundations and roofs
    •    Bale stacking techniques
    •    Placement of windows and doors
    •    Flooring
    •    Plaster and coatings
    •    Installing electrical and plumbing
    •    Interior wall construction
    •    Design considerations
    •    Codes and regulations
    •    Insurance and financing

  •     Individuals interested in building a straw bale home
  •     Builders who want to enter the natural building field
  •     Builders who want or increase their knowledge of straw bale construction
  •     Architects interested in learning more about straw bale building
  •     Students of architecture and environmental studies 
  •     Building department officials, real estate agents, bankers, and insurance agents

This workshop is free. However, students will be required to purchase a copy of the class text, More Strawbale Building: A Complete  Guide to Design and Building with Straw by Chris Magwood  -- Cost $35

Students taking this course for continuing education credit through the USGBC must pay an additional $50 for test grading and paperwork. Total cost: $85
