Intermediate Small Wind Energy Systems (2 day)
In this two-day course, taught by Dan Chiras, Ph.D., certified wind site assessor and author of Power from the Wind and The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy, students will explore in detail small wind electric systems – that is, 1 to 100 kW wind-electric systems suitable for homes, farms, and businesses. Students will view wind systems installed at The Evergreen Institute.
This course qualifies for (a) MREA's Continuing Education Credits for all certified site assessors and (b) MREA's Wind Site Assessment Certificate.
This course will greatly expand on the topics covered in the introductory course.
 Topics include:
• A deeper understanding key lectrical terms and concepts • Pros and cons of small wind energy systems • Forces that generate winds • Types of winds • Factors that affect wind speed and create turbulence • Types of wind systems • Basic wind site assessment • Hybrid wind and PV systems • Wind turbine designs and towers • Types of batteries and battery maintenance • How inverters work and types of inverters • How charge controllers work • The economics of wind energy systems • Permits and interconnection agreements • Insurance requirements.
Students will also be treated to slide shows on the installation of a 20 kW wind turbine, raising and lowering a tilt up towers, and homemade wind turbines. Students will spend some time in class each day applying what they’ve learned. You’ll learn to assess electrical demand, measure height of trees, and determine the best site for a wind turbine.
