Hands-on Green Building – A Systems Approach (5 days)
In this intensive five-day course, participants will explore green building for new and existing homes and businesses with internationally renowned green building and renewable energy expert Dan Chiras, author of The New Ecological Home, The Natural House, The Homeowner's Guide to Renewable Energy, and numerous other books.
In this hands-on workshop, approved for USGBC continuing education credit, participants will learn about green building materials, technologies, and techniques to create safe, healthy, resource-efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly homes.
In this course, participants will explore a variety of topics including:
• Site selection • Site protection • Ways to reduce wood use • Energy-efficient design and construction • Passive solar heating & cooling, solar electricity, solar hot water, & more • Green building materials • Sustainable water supply systems • Sustainable waste water systems • The cost of green building • Ways to make green building affordable
Participants will have an opportunity to view many green building products and technologies, including solar attic fans, solar tube skylights, wind and solar systems, superinsulation, straw bale construction, and natural plasters. Students will also have an opportunity to apply no-VOC paints, install a solar tube skylight, work with composite lumber, and perhaps install a compost toilet or dual-flush toilet (time and budget permitting).
