NABCEP -- North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners and Institute for Sustainable Power Accreditation

Individuals wishing to become installers may want to become certified through NABCEP -- the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. They certify solar electric and solar thermal system installers -- and will soon be certifying small wind system installers.

NABCEP certification is not required to become an installer, but certification raises ones level of credibility and it makes new installers potentially more employable.

Individuals can receive NABCEP Certification in one of several ways.  There's even an entry level certification program. Many routes require formal training at educational centers like The Evergreen Institute's Center for Renewable Energy. Although training centers do not formally require accreditation, NABCEP does recommend it. Their web site reads: "It is recommended that applicants (for NABCEP certification) look for training courses with Institute for Sustainable Power (ISP) accreditation."\

Even though our classes technically apply toward NABCEP certification, we decided to apply formally The Evergreen Institute completed its application in December 2009 and will submit the application in January 2010. We expect to have accreditation by the late spring or early the summer of 2010.

Midwest Renewable Energy Association -- Training Provider

In Januiary 2009, The Evergreen Institute received notice that its courses in solar electricity, solar thermal systems (solar hot water) and small wind will apply toward MREA's PV Site Assessor, Small Wind Site Assessor, and Residential Solar Hot Water Site Assessor certificates.

The courses taken through our educational center in Gerald, Missouri will also apply toward continuing education credits required of all MREA certified site assessors.
